Sam,
Thanks for having Taylor on with a bit of light-hearted banter. I’ve respected your work for a long time, but I also am grateful for your courage to step into the fray where a wide range of Catholics are very upset by this book. I have read the majority of the book and find some of the content a bit “imprudent” if we were talking about rumors and probabilities of men and women we knew had produced good fruits in the Church. However, when there is smoke, or something smells fishy, as much as you may not want to entertain loosely held possibilities, you must weigh all the options.
This is what I think Taylor is doing, with a dash of his full-forced language and direct speaking.

I haven’t viewed this yet, but Catholics need to be extremely careful in regard to this point of view. This isn’t the first time that members of the Clergy have failed the Church by becoming products of their own age, nor is it the first time that the laity has held views deeply antithetical to the teachings of the Church. We’re promised that the Church shall endure the ages to the end.
Merely because the Church at any one point, or perhaps more accurately significant members of the Church, seem to be failing doesn’t mean that they’ve fallen prey to some hideous planned plot. Indeed, simply succumbing to the age and its folly’s is much more likely and frankly much more dangerous as we’re all very much prone to that. Conspiracy theories of all types tend to comfort the reader as much as alarm the reader, as we know that we’re not part of a plot and therefore can’t fall victim to it ourselves. The more likely truth, that our times and its temptations are what causes us problems, is a more difficult truth and a more alarming one, as we are subject to that.
